SLR Productions LLC is currently crewing up for The Fundamentals, a coming-of-age sports drama short film based on the true story of Spencer Reed.
Set in rural Florida during the 1980s and 1990s, The Fundamentals follows a young boy who discovers an instructional basketball cassette tape and begins teaching himself the game, transforming hardship into discipline and finding a path toward a brighter future.
The film is scheduled to shoot in the Wilmington, North Carolina area in August 2026. Current production budget is approximately $20,000, with paid positions available.

About the Project
Inspired by the true story of Spencer Reed, The Fundamentals follows Joey, a young boy growing up in poverty in rural Florida during the 1980s. Abandoned by his mother and raised by his grandparents, Joey discovers an old boombox and a cassette titled “The Fundamentals of Basketball,” Volume Three.
Guided by the voice on the tape, Joey practices alone for years, transforming hardship into discipline and imagination into purpose. Set against tobacco fields, back roads, and small-town basketball courts, The Fundamentals is a coming-of-age sports drama about resilience, family, and the power of believing in something larger than your circumstances.
